All 20 rooms in the original house at Ballynahinch Castle Hotel have been refurbished, in time for the busy summer season.

The works were fully completed in May and were overseen by London-based Bryan O’Sullivan Studio. Along with 18 classic rooms, the two superior rooms were also renovated along with the main stairs of the castle.

There are five colour schemes used in the new rooms, with no two schemes in a row and no two in the same place on the floorplan above or below so as to ensure every room, even with the same or similar fabrics, feels completely unique.

Wallpaper played a major role in the bedroom and corridor refurbishment. In the bedrooms it has been used at high level to add interest to the room with papers from Morris & Co., Cole & Son and Pierre Frey, whereas in the corridors a textured wallpaper from Anaglypta is painted at low level, leaving the space above the dado to be filled with art.

The furniture is a mix of re-upholstered and restored existing furniture, sourced antiques from auctions and online, and bespoke for more exact items such as headboards and end of bed benches.

The air circulation has been streamlined by closing off unnecessary doors, and the former plain doors have been replaced with textured glass doors that include a panel detail picked up from elsewhere in the building.

“Bryan O’Sullivan Studio brought depth and luxury to these classic rooms while retaining the character and authenticity of the house,” says general manager Patrick O’Flaherty, who has been at the hotel for the past 22 years. “Individual responses to each room’s unique shape size and aspect using beautiful materials and well thought out colour schemes and lighting have ensured that the nature of the house was retained while the experience is significantly enhanced. Our regular visitors are delighted that their favourite rooms have retained that special character that they love so much.”

“It was an honour to work on such a special project,” says Bryan O’Sullivan of BOS Studio. “Ballynahinch for us stands out over any other hotel of its class as being beautifully unspoilt and magical. We were very conscious for our design intervention to be sympathetic to the fabric of the building. We were hopeful that the loyal guests would feel like they were returning home after the refurbishment and for the rooms to feel like they had always been decorated this way.”
