The four star Redcastle Hotel and Spa, on the shores of Lough Foyle, has announced a partnership package with Wild Ireland, Donegal’s new nature park which opened last year.
Wild Ireland is home to many endangered animals such as brown bears, wolves, lynxes, wild boars and rare monkey breeds and offers visitors the chance to see these endangered species roaming in their natural habitats. Redcastle Hotel is a 20 minute drive from Wild Ireland animal sanctuary which opened in October 2019.
The new package incorporates a stay at the Redcastle Hotel, entry into Wild Ireland, breakfast as well as hot chocolate and cookies on arrival. The family package starts from €185 midweek for a family of four (two adults and two children), and €235 on weekends, and includes a bedroom suite which includes a glamping themed experience with torches, books and a colouring pack for children.
Owner of the sanctuary, Killian McLaughlin, began work on developing Wild Ireland 6 years ago, in an ancient forest near the border with Northern Ireland with a mission to try to turn back time by bringing in animals that were once native to Ireland, including wild boar and deer. Apart from the monkeys, all of the animals in the sanctuary were once native to Ireland and all have been rescued from dangerous or unsuitable situations. Mr McLaughlin worked with a number of international charities to rescue the animals and bring them to Donegal.
The three bears, two sisters and their brother, came from a private zoo in Lithuania where they were living in a concrete cell with iron bars. Mr McLaughlin said the brown bears are the only ones currently in Ireland.
Wild Ireland’s director Killian McLaughlin said: “It’s fantastic to have a local hotel such as Redcastle on board to support Wild Ireland. Since opening, there has been a lot of enthusiasm with people coming from all across Ireland to see the animals here. We are looking forward to welcoming lots of visitors here over the coming months.”
As well as being a neighbour to Wild Ireland, Redcastle Hotel and Spa is also located only 20 minutes from Derry city, and is also next door to Leisureland. The hotel also boasts a spa, golf course and cinema.
