Molson Coors has announced plans to cease production at its Irwindale, California, brewery, by september 2020.
The company has also signed an agreement with Pabst Brewing Company giving the latter an option to purchase the Irwindale facility.
The plant opened in 1980 and employs approximately 470 people. In 2019 the brewery produced 4.8m barrels, shipped to 261 independently owned distributors. Brands currently produced at Irwindale include Miller Light, Coors Light, and Miller High Life, as well as several brands for Pabst. The closure will not affect production and availability of these beers as they will be transitioned to other facilities.
The move follows Molson Coors’ recently announced plans to restructure the business and cut between 400 and 500 jobs. Those numbers do not include the Irwindale closure, meaning total job losses could top 900.
“This move will allow us to optimize our brewery footprint while streamlining our operations for greater efficiency across the network,” said Chief Integrated Supply Chain Officer Brian Erhardt. “While it was a very difficult decision, we have extra capacity in our system and Irwindale’s production can be absorbed by other breweries in our network.”
