A range of sparkling green teas brewed and blended in Co. Mayo has been launched in 250ml cans to target the growing food-to-go, health conscious consumer.
Mariko Sparkling Green Tea is owned by Christine McAndrew. After researching into the market and what consumers want, she discovered there was a gap in the market for a healthy functional beverage. She developed the recipe in conjunction with Teagasc and CAFRE.
The teas are brewed from Japanese Sencha leaves; contain a high level of green tea antioxidant (EGCG) and no sugar, sweeteners or calories.
“I was adamant that I didn’t want to add artificial sweeteners. The taste is pure and natural. There are so many drinks on the market which are absolutely loaded with sugar and our target market is definitely the health-conscious consumer,” said Christine.
“We started off selling in 750ml glass bottles and got into the SuperValu Food Academy. We were then listed nationwide. We still sell the glass bottles but the huge growth in the food-to-go sector led to us introducing the cans. They are perfect for busy people on the go, whether that’s in staff canteens, gyms, vending machines or service stations.
“Many more people are now working from home and contract caterers are now doing lunches for home workers so that’s another avenue we’re actively pursuing,” she said.
Mariko Sparkling Teas are distributed nationwide by Brand Shapers. They come in natural, lemon and lime, and berry flavours. They can also be ordered online at www.mariko.ie.
