A hotel in London has created an inflatable ‘personal space’ jacket to help tourists deal with crowds in the capital.
At first glance the PVC jacket looks unremarkable, however if the wearer feels their space is being encroached by others, the coat can be inflated via an electric pump inserted into a valve in the jacket – creating a barrier between wearer and busy crowds.
When inflated, the prototype “Space Optimiser” jacket creates an exclusion zone of 18 inches – the minimum measurement of what is considered ‘personal space’ according to experts in Proxemics, the study of how humans utilise space.
According to a recent study commissioned by Leonardo Hotels, 3.5m British people have never visited London, with 21% saying it’s because the capital is too busy and imposing on personal space. In order to overcome this problem, Leonardo Hotels has created the personal space jacket.
Jason Carruthers, MD of Jurys Inn & Leonardo Hotels UK & Ireland, said: “The results from the survey clearly show that busy crowds are stopping people from visiting this incredible city.
“The Space Optimiser jacket will allow people to go into those crowded tourist hot spots, without feeling too overwhelmed by impositions on their personal space.”
