Killarney's five star Europe Hotel and Resort is to undergo a €3m extension, which will see a new accommodation block built specifically for staff.
The new buildings will house 40 staff bedrooms, in addition to the existing accommodation catering for 70 employees, according to the Irish Times. Killarney Hotels, the group behind the hotel, said it plans to build four blocks each containing ten bedrooms, along with gym and laundry facilities.
The project is being handled by Griffin Brothers Construction, of Castleisland, Co. Kerry. Construction is due to begin in February 2018 and is expected to be completed by August.
Michael Brennan, the director of Killarney Hotels, said: “With shortage of rental accommodation on offer in Killarney, we realise the difficulty that this causes to our employees from outside of the region”.
Improved staff facilities is something many high end hotels are looking to invest in, to help with the current challenge of recruiting and retaining staff. Ashford Castle in Co. Mayo is also planning to build a staff accommodation block of a similar nature.
Killarney Hotels also owns the Dunloe Hotel which is currently undergoing extensive renovations and is expected to be reopened by April this year.
