David Joyce Crowned Winner of European Chef’s Cup in Barcelona

Irish chef David Joyce has been named Best European Chef for 2018 at the annual European Chefs’ Cup competition, held by Aramark.

The competition, now in its third year, saw seven professional chefs go head to head in Barcelona and brought together talent from Ireland, Germany, United Kingdom, Belgium / Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Denmark and Spain.

Each of the seven participating chefs had to create a three course menu from a pre-selected shopping basket. All candidates had four hours to complete and present their dishes. The judging panel included Carlos Fernández, Chef from Martin Berasategui’s Team; (Berasategui holds 8 Michelin Stars in total for his three restaurants in Barcelona, Tenerife and San Sebastian) Luca Rodi, 2015 Top Chef Finalist and Óscar Teixidó, Culinary Coordinator at the School of Hospitality, Barcelona (CETT).

Irish chef David Joyce was crowned winner of the competition in the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona while second place was awarded to UK Chef Stefano Corrias, and Spanish Chef, Javier Artero, achieved third place.

David Joyce said: “It’s been an incredible experience and I knew going into this competition that I would be competing against some the best chefs Europe has to offer. I couldn't have succeeded here today without the continued education and support from all of my colleagues and, in particular, my mentors Ross Lewis and Derek Reilly.”

Congratulating David on his win, Derek Reilly, Culinary Director, Aramark Ireland, said: “We’re extremely proud of David; he displayed such skill, passion and determination to produce exceptional dishes. He worked so hard in the months lead up to the competition, not only with the Aramark Culinary team, but also Ross Lewis of Chapter One. It’s a truly outstanding achievement!”

Shane Flynn, Managing Director of Food Services Ireland, said: "This competition is all about honoring our chefs and it’s always a pleasure to see such talent. The seven talented chefs in this year’s final were chosen for their passion, skill and ability. This is an exciting competition that nurtures growing talent. I was impressed by the expertise, the ambition and commitment of each chef in the competition.”
