Two new independent breweries are set to open in Derry in the next few weeks.
James Huey decided to set up the Walled City Brewery at the iconic Ebrington Square development after being made redundant from Diageo in Dundalk last year. He’s opening a brewpub and restaurant in March where his anchor boom pale ale, India pale ale and lager will be sold.
He’s already been testing out the brews by selling at a market stall at the Christmas village at Ebrington and also at a culture tech event.
“People seemed to like the beers when they tried them at the stalls. We did a limited edition run of 4 beers; apricot, sour cherry, oak & vanilla and dry hop. They sold out!” enthuses James.
“I think the brewpub idea is a great way of telling our story and the location is perfect. My wife and my two sisters are part of the dream team and we’re really looking forward to opening up,” says James.
David Rogers and his wife Martina plan to start production at their Northbound Brewery site in Campsie next month. They will able to make up to 2,500 litres at a time of pale ale, lager and German kolsch-style ale.
Management consultant David did a Master Brewing Diploma after becoming interested in craft brewing while living in Australia. He’s originally from Scotland and his wife is from Fermanagh. They moved back to Northern Ireland with their three children in 2012.

“We’ve seen best practice in Japan and Australia and I want to take what we’ve learned to make a sustainable brewery in the north west of Ireland, which hopefully will become a regional brewery.
“If you get it right you can create great process and come up with consistently good beer. It’s also perfect to fit in with our family life,” says David.
Northbound and Walled City will be the first independent craft beer producers to open in the city since the 1980s.
A new East Belfast brewery called Boundary is also due to start production soon – owner Matthew Dick raised £100,000 within a few days through crowd-funding.
