British wine supplier Copestick Murray has signed a deal to distribute Hegarty Chamans wines in the UK and Ireland, following on from a chance opportunity at a wine conference in September 2014.
At the annual Wine and Spirit Trade Association conference, Hegarty Chamans owner Sir John Hegarty (a founder of famous ad agency BBH) was giving a speech on his perceived poor quality of wine company advertising, while also mentioning his own estate in France’s Minervois region. Robin Copestick seized on the opportunity, asked aloud “Are you looking for a UK distributor?” and rushed up to hand Sir John his business card.
Clearly the stunt made a positive impression on Sir John, and a distribution deal has now been agreed that will see the Hegarty Chamans range of biodynamic and organic wines sold throughout the UK and Ireland.
The current range will be distributed to the on-trade, independent stores and local wine specialists, while the two companies will collaborate on a new range of Languedoc wines.
Speaking to The Drinks Business, Sir John said: “Working with a dynamic, entrepreneurial company has always been the ambition of Hegarty Chamans. That’s why we’re excited to be working with Robin and his team. I’ve always believed wine needs less mystery and more magic. I know we’ll get that from Copestick Murray.”
“This is a great way to start 2015,” said Robin Copestick.
