Constellation Brands has announced it has taken a minority stake in Durham, N.C.-based Durham Distillery.
Co-founded in 2013 by Melissa and Lee Katrincic, Durham Distillery specialises in craft gin, vodka and liqueur products as well as ready to drink canned cocktails. It has been recognised by USA Today as the #1 craft gin distillery in America, and has won over 50 national and international awards.
Durham’s full product line includes premium Conniption gins (including navy strength and American dry releases), the Damn Fine Liqueurs brand, and a line of canned cocktails including gin & tonic, vodka & soda, and a recently released gin rosé spritz.
The deal gives Durham access to Constellation’s supply chain, as well as its expertise in brand building and logistics.
This investment was made through Constellation Brands Ventures’ $100m Focus on Female Founders program which makes meaningful investments in female-founded and female-led businesses doing disruptive and innovative work across beverage alcohol. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
President and CEO Melissa Katrincic and her husband, partner and Head Distiller Lee Katrincic, will continue to manage, produce, market and sell Durham Distillery’s portfolio.
Constellation Brands is best known for beers like Corona and Modelo, and has recently been investing in startup spirits companies. Other moves this year include minority stakes in California-based craft mezcal maker El Silencio, and New York-based Black Button Distilling.
