Black Twist Hard Coffee – Breaking the Mold

Black Twist Coffee

A unique marriage of speciality coffee and Irish whiskey, Black Twist - Ireland's first cold brewed coffee spirit - seeks to deliver a better coffee experience to the discerning drinker.

As a coffee lover who enjoys the occasional drink, Conor Coughlan from Co. Waterford was left uninspired by the overly sweetened, generic coffee liqueurs on the market. "The trends in both coffee and spirits point to increasing consumer demand for better quality and more authentic flavours. Despite this, the bar shelf is dominated by highly sweetened liqueurs," says Conor.

Determined to introduce a better, more authentic coffee experience to the spirits world, he set about developing Black Twist - the first cold brewed coffee spirit of its kind. Despite its unique positioning, the Black Twist vision is simple - to bring the finest specialty coffee and Irish whiskey together, without the high sugar content of a coffee liqueur. This is achieved through sourcing of the finest natural ingredients and a cold brew process inspired by the coffee world.

"We source speciality grade coffee from Kenya and roast it to a specific profile. We then grind this up and fully immerse in Irish whiskey, slowly cold brewing it for seven days. The result is a unique fusion of both flavours, but with less sweetness and more character."

"This makes Black Twist the ideal digestif. We recommend serving it neat with an orange slice as it's the perfect drink to sip after dinner. It is also a very versatile cocktail ingredient, because sweetness can always be added but it can't be taken away," adds Conor.

Coffee cocktails naturally pair very well with food occasions, and represent a great opportunity to trade up coffee lovers from the usual after-dinner coffee. This presents restaurants with a great opportunity to increase spend per head and increase margins.

2017 saw Black Twist win two stars in the Great Taste awards and a silver in the Blas na hEireann awards. It is available to the trade through Tindal Wine Merchants (  |  01 866 5680) and more information can be found at
