Dublin’s Bar 1661 is gearing up to celebrate the 5th annual Poitín Day this coming 18th November with a simultaneous bar swap with The Sun Tavern in London.
Originally started in collaboration with The Sun Tavern in London, home of the UK’s largest legal collection of poitín, and Bán Poitín, the brand behind Bar 1661, the day is dedicated to the original Irish spirit.
On Monday 18th November from 5pm, bartenders Ross Painter and Jamie Jones from The Sun Tavern will be taking over Bar 1661; while Gillian Boyle and Luke O’Meara from Bar 1661 will be stepping behind the bar at The Sun Tavern. Poitín afficinado Tommy Cummins will lead a poitín tasting at The Sun Tavern at 7pm, while Bán Poitin founder Dave Mulligan will do the same at Bar 1661.
A collaborative menu of six poitín cocktails has been created with two cocktails for €16.61, including Bar 1661’s Belfast Coffee (Bán Poitín, cold brew coffee, demerara, cream, nutmeg) and Mad March Mule (Mad March Hare Poitín, lime, Umbrella Brewing ginger beer), and The Sun Tavern’s John Doe (Bán Poitín, Irish whiskey, madeira, chestnut liqueur) and Kneecapper (Mad March Hare Poitín, lemon, honey, absinthe).
Sponsors of the bar swap include Mad March Hare Irish Poitín, winner of Best Irish Poitín at the Irish Whiskey Awards 2019.
Legalised in 1997, poitín was granted Geographical Indicative (GI) status by the EU in 2008 and is undergoing a resurgence in recent years with a number of distillers focusing on its production.
