Premium Irish sea salt producer Achill Island Sea Salt has introduced a new smoked version to its multi-award-winning sea salt range.
The Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt is pure, natural sea salt, hand harvested from the Atlantic waters that surround Achill Island in Co. Mayo. It is produced by hot smoking the Achill Island Sea Salt over oak and beech to create a smoked version.
Marjorie O’Malley, co-founder of Achill Island Sea Salt, said: “The Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt is aimed at those who appreciate good salt and its importance in seasoning food, be they chefs or home cooks. The subtle smoky aroma and flavour of our new Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt intensifies the savoury essence of a dish. It’s also aimed at those who appreciate Irish food that has a provenance, is natural, and was used by our ancestors.”
The launch of the new Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt coincides with the switch from plastic tubs to 75g glass jars for both the smoked and original varieties. Marjorie O’Malley said: “Our raw material is the ocean and plastic is clogging up our oceans. We simply did not want our single-use plastic tub to contribute to this pollution so we decided to make a change. The new packaging gives a more premium feel to our products and the packaging is recyclable.”
Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt can be used to season and enhance the simplest of ingredients and also to create entirely new dishes. Recipes Marjorie particularly likes are roasted asparagus with Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt and parmesan; butterscotch and Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt ice cream; and toasted white chocolate almond bark with Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt.
The Smoked Achill Island Sea Salt RRP is €4 and is available from selected SuperValu stores, Avoca stores, independent retailers and the Achill Island Sea Salt online shop at www.achillislandseasalt.ie.
