Participants in a sports and business ambassador programme in Clare and Limerick helped bring more than €7.5m euro into the region during 2014.

That is according to the Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau, which this week held an awards ceremony acknowledging the contribution made by 40 participants of the Conference & Sports Ambassadors Programme to the local economy. Collectively, the Ambassadors attracted 30 national and international conferences and events to the region last year.

Among the award recipients was Ambassador of the Year, Professor Elfed Lewis of the University of Limerick who has played a key role in establishing Limerick and Clare as one of Ireland’s most prominent regions for international conferences. Having brought many international conferences to Limerick in the past, Professor Lewis has recently secured the 6th European Workshop on Optical Fibre Sensors for Limerick in 2016.

The Conference & Sports Ambassadors Programme is targeted at increasing the Clare and Limerick region’s share of the lucrative national and international sports tourism market. Hundreds of ambassadors have been actively working with the Bureau in recent years to help attract thousands of people to the region through a range of business and sports events.

“We are delighted to recognise the efforts of our Ambassadors who bid for and win lucrative business tourism for the region,” said Tony Brazil, Chair of the Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau.
